Apple says watchOS 27 uses improved motion-tracking algorithms to measure treadmill distance more precisely from the wrist, but TechRadar’s single-tester gym runs against a Coros Pod 2 found gaps of about 300 metres on the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Apple Watch Series 11 beta, and roughly 200 metres on the public release on the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Apple Watch Series 12. That is small over a marathon but could matter on a 5km, so run Apple’s recommended 20-minute outdoor calibration, then compare one treadmill session against the belt’s own display before you trust the weekly total.

Marty’s Take:

Treadmill distance is where wrist-based tracking has always been weakest, because the watch only guesses at stride while the belt does the real work. An algorithm update helps, but it cannot fix a miscalibrated belt or a runner who drifts forward and back. If indoor miles are your main data, the best fitness tracker for you may be the one that accepts a foot pod.
